The Republic of Tea, one of Novato’s more recognizable companies, has created a successful niche purveying a product many use to relax and unwind. But for employees of the company, that state of mind isn’t a luxury reserved for after-hours. It’s an environment the Republic uses to improve conditions at work.
The strategy seems to have worked for the importer, which has grown large enough to move its headquarters from its previous location on Digital Drive to Hangar 5 at the Hamilton Landing. There, according to “Minister of Enlightenment” Meredith Post, who heads the company’s media relations, The Republic of Tea has used the ancient Chinese art of feng shui to arrange its office environment. Management believes the fastidiously arranged office space will improve conditions for employees and impress prospective and returning buyers, benefiting the corporation on multiple levels.
The location of the new office was the first step in creating the preferred atmosphere for employees, said Post.
“We just moved (to Hamilton Landing) on May 21,” she said. “We had just grown to the point that we needed more space, but we’re very committed to staying in Novato … (and) we loved what they’re doing at Hamilton.”
The office park, which has received recognition for its “green” design and mix of tenants, was a good fit, said Post.

Worried About the Economic Downturn?
Prosperity Training Program to Help Business Executives Cope With Looming Economic Slide
Arlington, Washington – August 12, 2008
If economic uncertainties have you worried enough to try something new for your business, Polaris Business Guides LLC of Arlington, WA, has a suggestion.
"It’s possible to eliminate anxiety and establish patterns that promote an effortless flow of positive energies in the workplace using proven prosperity training techniques," says Guides co-founder Madeline C. Gerwick.
The company has announced an October 9 start-up date for its popular "Eight Keys to the Ultimately Prosperous Business," a seminar series that is taught by phone and supported by web-based materials. Over an eight-month period the program teaches participants how the "quantum physics of business" works.
Gerwick says the program includes powerful tools to create a thriving environment and maximize profitability. Participants utilize the subtle energies scientists tell us exist to expand consciousness and dramatically improve the quality of results achieved.
"As the financial cracks in the system become larger, it becomes more urgent for us to understand how our personal, business and national finances are created energetically first before they manifest in our bank accounts. Companies and individuals who don’t want to join the economic downturn are primary candidates for the training," she believes.
Covered in the course in separate 75- minute segments will be such topics as creating prosperity through collaboration, releasing blockages to success, the effects of subtle energy in the workplace and the alchemy of creating desired results. Also covered will be trusting the process of partnership, optimizing the office for ease and flow, wealth building for stakeholders and business timing for success.
In addition to the 75-minute individual classes there will also be 60-minute group coaching sessions each month. Set times for classes have been established but the company also offers custom classes at different times for corporate sponsors.
Digital phone recordings and computer replays will be available for each session.
Joining Gerwick in presenting the course will be Margaret M. Donahue, a business consultant, speaker, teacher and author whose 21 years in corporate America included a position as Vice President and General Manager for a subsidiary of American Express. A graduate of Georgetown University with an MBA from Boston University, she is the founder of Feng Shui Connections, is a co-founder of the Feng Shui & Intuitive Arts and a co-founder of Living Energy LLC. She is certified as a Building Biology Environmental Consultant, as a Prosperity Guide and as a facilitator of the Emotional Freedom & Healing technique.
Gerwick graduated with honors from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in economics and spent many years in industrial marketing and sales. An internationally recognized business/personal astrologer, writer and in-demand speaker, she hosts her own weekly radio show, Cosmic Connections with Madeline, as part of the Dr. Pat Show. She is author of The Good Timing Guide, an annual calendar guide that tracks and analyzes planetary cycles to help business executives, investors and others manage corporate and personal timing issues. And she is co-author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Astrology, published by Penguin Group. She’s also a contributing author to the business anthology, Einstein’s Business: Engaging Soul, Imagination and Excellence in the Workplace, along with Oprah, Steven Covey, Scott Peck, Donald Trump and other well known contributors.

From Alumni and recent Graduate Susan Nunn:
My focus will be on restaurant consulting and feng shui for the restaurants (mostly) (we are turning this restaurant totally ‘green’ this fall)…. and all of the foods (right now we are known for having the healthiest foods around) but now we are going no partially hydrogenated oils, nothing bad at all, and I am leaving next week for a week’s cooking class in santa fe with the conscious gourmet and that focus is on no sugar and no dairy, and making our own hotcake flours, etc….
And not only organic but sustainable agricultural practices as well. I am so excited. Also have joined the Green Restaurant Assoc and they have assigned an environmental consultant to guide is up to newer levels…. This can help my personal business as well. Wow. Blessings, and I hope this finds you all well and happy.

A Sobering Take on Feng Shui
The decor philosophy is drawing new followers: recovering addicts hoping to reorder their lives.
By Kavita Daswani, Special to The [Los Angeles] Times
May 18, 2008
FENG SHUI was co-opted by the West at the same time that disco started to take hold, and some 35 years later, it’s still rattling wind chimes. Now this quasi-mystical home improvement formula is getting a look from the world of rehab, where its unique blend of wishful thinking and Martha Stewart finickiness is seen as the promise of a more sustainable recovery.
This ancient Chinese philosophy is now being used to help modulate behavior, and feng shui advisors and consultants on both coasts have reported an increased interest in the services from individuals struggling with such addictions as narcotics, alcohol, sex, shopping and gambling. Consulting costs range from $300 an hour to $1,500 per 1,500 square feet.
Ken Lauher, who bills himself as a celebrity feng shui consultant in New York, has noticed a spike in calls from recovering addicts during the last several months, and Connie Spruill, director of education at the Feng Shui Institute of America near Columbus, Ohio, reports that 1 in 10 of her new clients is struggling with a predilection toward alcohol and drugs.
"I think it’s the evolution of feng shui in America," said Sylvia Watson, co-manager of the Feng Shui Institute of America. "There has been a lot of success for people who need help with their career or a relationship, and it’s only natural that people are starting to think about using feng shui in dealing with addictions."

“The home we are in now has just a few areas that we haven’t fully made our own. Our shared office is one of those and we just recently took actions to align this physical space with our tastes and preferences. I moved out book cases and we cleared out books, papers, etc. that we no longer love, need, use.
