2014 – The Year of the Yang Wood Horse
By Karen Abler-Carrasco

PLEASE NOTE: Read about 2015 – the Year of the Yin Wood Sheep here.
There might not be a bigger shift of energies in the entire 60 year wheel of Chinese astrology than this one coming up–the shift from two Water years of deep introspection to the fast-paced spurt of extroverted forward propulsion that the Wood Horse brings. Hold on to your hats, folks, and realize that you won’t be able to, nor will you want to, slow your horses in the New Year ahead!
This will be a promethean year, the Beginning of all beginnings, arriving around January 31st to February 4th, 2014. Full of uplift, optimism and compelling inspiration, we will be guided into purposeful action of the most elegantly simple and powerfully fruitful kind. After two years of feeling every revelation of corruption in the dark as if it was scouring our subconscious insides and wringing us dry of watery emotion, we are READY for this change! Light, hope and clarity of vision gallop in. Emerge from your cocoons, everybody, here we goooooo!
Because this will be such a big change of energetic experience for us, it will help to review here how the cycle of the sacred Five Elements, or Phases, have set us up for this shift. In that cycle, Wood feeds Fire, Fire’s ash creates Earth, Earth’s compression reveals gems of Metal, and Metal collects and holds Water, which nourishes the Wood to start the cycle all over again. The natural laws of these five elements are actually working in multiple ways throughout Nature, our bodies, our psychologies and the energetic movements of all things here on this planet. In these movements, there are cycles within cycles, one of which is the cycle of birth, growth, disintegration and death, or the void that comes after old life and before new life.
We have just been traveling through that void, in two Water years, which immersed us in a descending place of degeneration, dissolution and chaos, a time when our internal world of formless spirit and emotions held total sway over every attempt at external control or order. For most of us, it was an unsettling time of letting go of many things, either voluntarily or forcefully, a time of deep soul searching, with gradual or sudden destabilization in many areas of family and livelihood. There was a profound search for a return to a spiritual basis for daily living. This all had the effect of highlighting an individual’s isolation and powerlessness within a seemingly random and careless society. Not that outright rebellion and outcry didn’t happen, globally as well as internally. The 2012 Yang Water Dragon year saw to that, with its critical promptings of social responsibility and heroism, and this Yin Water Snake year that followed delved even deeper into the most hidden caves of stagnant dysfunctionality and corruption on all levels.
The good and great news is that we have completed 5 years of the degenerative part of the cycles–that of the harvested, decomposing Earth, compressing and eliminative Metal, and dissolving, settling out, cleansing Water. We now emerge into the generative cycles–powerful, bursting buds of Wood’s new growth fueling the joyful outreach and passions of Fire and the beginnings of Earth’s fruitful harvests.
So, that’s the Wood part of what’s coming. Now to turn our gaze to the animal symbol of Horse. This sprouting upward rush of Wood energy will find its perfect release into the impulsive and passionate nature of the Yang Horse, whose native element is Fire. The Horse energy inspires powerful INTUITION and an indomitable surge towards freedom in every aspect of life. This is a year to follow your inner voice like never before, for it will have a universal cosmic ch’i within it. Higher guidance is with us every step of the way. Reach for the sky, call up your vision, fuel your plans with vision boards and creativity, find a fresh path and pace yourself well. This yang Horse year has the potential to channel the powerful new upthrust of Wood’s Ch’i through the Horse’s Heart energy of Fire and into every project we start, every desire we reach for. It will keep our eager plans from being dominated by too much “head” and not enough “heart.”
It may be quite challenging to trust that we have this absolutely new, purified and hopeful energy to build on now. Our hearts have had to endure a gauntlet of deconstruction through two Metal and two Water years, but the fiery Horse is about to change all of that. Within the extroverted “Green Horse” year, we will not only branch out with new growth, but we will be able to stoke the Fire element of love in every area of life. Follow your intuition fearlessly, as it is both the horse’s main attribute which preserves its freedom and powerful health and it is Wood’s primary talent for stretching into the unknown future. Reach out with irrepressible faith to a new level of social communion and mutual support. Trust every impulse to embrace a revitalized and renewed sensitivity for the pleasures this earthly dimension has to offer.
Step up and out of any old clutter, stored memories, should-have-dones or regrets. The time to deal with that is over for now. Untangle your thoughts quickly and get clear on what it is that you truly desire in this lifetime. Your trusty steed is here, full of vibrant health and tremendous stamina. It should be quite a fast ride, so grab a fistful of mane, hang on to the reins, cast your old cares to the wind and let out a whoop of delight–Yeeehaaw! Upward and onward we thrive! May we all be blest abundantly as we hold each other closer in the circle of health and new life the Wood Horse year brings.

love it, Karen!
Bravo Karen! A fantastic article on every level! And – Yippee Ki A to the year of the Wood Horse!
I LOVE this article describing the year to come. I would like permission to publish it in the February issue of “The Inner Voice” e-magazine. http://www.theinnervoicemagazine.com
Thanks, Nancy
yes, Nancy, it would be fine to republish this, as long as you credit the author AND, most importantly, attach the WSFS website address so that folks can go there to view it, and other info should they so desire. We are desiring to have more people know about the Western School of Feng Shui, as so many of our grads are out there doing such wonderful work. I am so glad that this article inspired you, I was quite inspired myself when writing it–it almost wrote itself!
Hi Karen,
Lovely and helpful article! I would also appreciate to re-publish this on my website http://www.BeingSeeekers.com with credits. Is it ok?
Thank you,
Jessica
Absolutely Jessica,
Thank you for being a kindred spirit! Please retain links to this site and author credit is all we ask to keep the cycle of Ch’i flowing.
Many Blessings,
WSFS
Wow, thanks for such an illuminating article Karen. I can already feel the energy shifting!
I love this article!! And as a Horse, looking forward to the year!!
What a wonderfully written article! So inspiring and chock full of positive energy. Here’s to the year of the yang wood horse! ~Dana
I love your insight! It will be quite a year!
Hi there, thank you for writing & sharing this.
Would it be OK to please explain how metals hold and collect water? Please understand that I’m not trolling or anything…just genuinely curious at that part.
Blessings, Toby
Good question, Toby. We can easily see that all of the OTHER elements do not support Water—–Wood (plants) use it up, Fire creates steam and evaporates it, Earth muddies it up and eventually absorbs all of it. Only Metal has the ability to encounter Water, give it a form and boundary and hold it for relatively long periods of time. In the ancient Chinese world, it was seen that forged metal bowls would collect the nighttime dew as condensation, and create a puddle of water by morning, holding it to be used, before the sun (Fire) might evaporate it again. We can also simply observe these elements in Nature: soil (Earth) or grass (Wood) stream banks erode under the force of flowing water, and a stream will spread out in shallow puddles to gradually evaporate into a muddy bog. Stone walls and boulders (Metal) will hold and form that stream into a deeper channel of their own choosing, forcing it to collect and flow ever more rapidly and powerfully to its destination. Metal pipes do the same in modern times. I love how Metal supports Water and makes it more powerful. The formless, yielding quality of Water sometimes needs a good firm Metal boundary in order to increase its depth and produce spiritual wisdom in our lives. All 5 Elements, working and playing together in balance and harmony is a glorious thing to behold, whether it be in Nature, in metaphor, in our bodies and spirits, or in a room full of colors and shapes! The Spirits of the Five Elements are one of the most life enhancing aspects of feng shui, and one of the strongest teachings here in the Western School of Feng Shui.
Thanks so much for this explanation, Karen!
Very nice explanation
Brilliant piece of writing and an excellent explanation.
Toby, water collects as condensation on cold metal. That’s how it’s explained. 🙂
Im ready for the forward move.
This is a wonderfully written article! Being an earth horse and a double sagitarius (sun and rising) I am feeling the change like nothing I’ve ever, EVER experienced in my meager 35 years of this life. I want to share a vision with you that I received last week from the spirit of aloha on the north shore of Oahu. When there has been a major war (talking forces of light and dark) and those at the top of the chain of command finally come to an agreement to end the war, it takes time for the message to get to the front lines where the actual fighting is taking place. From the monks in India to the shamans of the amazon to the kahunas of the islands to the grandmothers of turtle island…all of my associates that are truly connected a
Thank you for your comment, I would really like to hear more about your vision, what you write stops mid sentence….. Can you make another comment to continue? All best wishes at this very special time, Gail
Feeling it on the Big Island…lots of awakening energy going on
Yeehaaaa! Well now, that explains a lot! Thanks you Karen for sharing.
Thanks Karen for the info I really appreciate it!
Bring it on 😀
Nice article but can someone explain the insistence of journalists to use the western calendar year to define the Lunar Year. 2014 and 2015 will both be part of this year of the horse.
Nobody is perfect, that is the answer William. I don’t think it is a big deal, 11 months of it will be in 2014 anyway. Don’t sweat the small stuff, but make plenty of room for the big stuff. 🙂
Wow, I had felt the energies changing big time, but this is SO AFFIRMING of what I and many of my intuitive friends have been sensing, that I now declare that this is going to be the first REALLY GOOD year of the decade for us regular folks, who have been suffering since they robbed the bank and wrecked the economy in 2008 (thank you once more George Bush and Dick Cheney). Live your dream this year! Make it happen! Steve Charrier http://www.HeroesJourneyTarot.com
I love this article and have shared it on my Facebook page.
Many have been hit recently and the only choices seem to be ‘get trampled’ or ‘ride’….. I hope we all choose to RIDE
I am a Horse….so I am presuming this is going to be extra spectacular for me!!! Yay!
Wow!! Thank you for this powerful reading. It’s one of the best I’ve come across. I’m sharing it with so many friends who will benefit from this.
What an inspiring prediction. Makes soo much sense!
Thank goodness, I now have now a time to look forward to!
Giddy up!
This is inspiring and I love how you have included the cycle and how this wooden horse fits into the bigger picture. I’m motivated to be ready for a swift ride! Thank you Karen!
Thank you for the bigger picture context of the Wooden Horse with the process of the last few years. I’m totally inspired to get myself ready for a swift ride. Thank you Karen!
Brilliant post, really resonates. Lots of new and exciting things on the horizon. Many thanks 🙂
A very powerful year for us 1966’s….Dream big, plan higher, achieve them goals
Thanks so much for this article, Karen. As a wood horse, I’ve had a very tough couple of years. I’m looking forward to making the most of that renewed energy!
Thank you for writing such an inspiring hopeful article. I have sensed my own emergence from a dark introspective time. I embrace this new energetic shift willingly!!
Love this! Since I work with horses & humans, this is very fitting!
Karen,
Thank you for your posting….I feel this positive shift already!
Looking for to the year of the Horse!
I know! I’ve been feeling this, but wasn’t aware of the explanation – so, thanks! Now I have more confidence and excitement about it! Yeeooowwww!
hi…I’m a Wood Horse (1954) Any comments for us born in that year? Aloha! :Deb
Thank you! I’ve been feeling this energy since December and didn’t understand what was happening. I’m pleased to hear it’s not just a flash in the pan! As others have said… bring it on!
Thankyou! I started experiencing this energy in December so it’s really good to understand what is happening. It’s also good to know it’s not just a flash in the pan. As others have said, bring it on!
AwéSöMé article, Karen
I also feel the energyg is already shifting… this metal tiger woman is ready ( I think!)
gee haw!
Love this – and so ready to move into action! Thank you!
WHoo Hoooo!! I am so ready!
This article brought tears to my eyes. I was born in 1966, and Horse is my year. The past few years have been brutally hard, experiencing all of the introspection, loss and self-dooubt you list above. As 2013 ended, I felt like I had cleared some hurdle, that perhaps 2014 would be the ray of sunshine I had been hoped for thru this struggle. This article helps me think that that intuition is right, and I am moving forward with it. Thanks! I am signing up for emails…
WOW…I am also a Horse year (1954) and the past 2 years have been tough for me too…bring on 2014!
Kelli- I’m SO glad you wrote this! I also was born in 1966 and was telling everyone I have such a positive outlook on this year– my dreams of what I’ve always wanted to create since childhood seem to be falling into place after a horrible few years (confronting an abuser from my family and subsequently parting ways, and recovering my drive from a business which didn’t thrive in 2009)… my intuition seemed to be yelling to me that things will be good. I’ve also had ample opportunity for spiritual growth by many paths. Then I read this article and I started crying because I know this is talking to me! Thank You Karen for sharing this!!!
Wow … love it. I am a sagitarius fire sign so this is right on for me. Life changes are happening … fast and furious … hang on and enjoy the ride. <3
Comment
Very good article.
Thank you Karen.
Excellent article Karen, thank you so much for sharing it with us!
Love your article!! It gallops along just like the coming year of the horse. I both excites me and scares me at the same time.
Can’t wait!!!!!
I really felt those 2 water years , and am so looking forward to moving on , thanks for this !
Dear Karen. this is the most inspirational message for so many people. Your writing is so uplifting and the year ahead impossible not to achieve. Looking forward to it and hope that you are renewed and the power of love comes your way in a new way. Friendships built further in case your married.
Many regards and thankyou
Lanell (fire sheep)
Beautiful, inspiring, and uplifting…thank you!
Thank you Karen for a well-written, insightful piece on this New Year of the Wood Horse…being a Wood Horse (1954) I have felt some powerful energy coming on for about the past month…also going through a Saturn return so the past couple of years have been truly a time of letting go of the past (among other things). Refreshing article — Mahalo from Hawaii 😀
When I read this my heart exploded with emotion. A rush of tears and a very real sense of relief encompassed my entire being. I cannot thank Karen enough for this post. I am sending out beautiful feelings and love to everyone.
I was born in the year of the horse so I hope this means things will FINALLY start getting better for me. I’ve only been waiting since the last CENTURY.
This is very interesting and seems very true!
It would be about a million times easier to read if you’d use a better typeface. The letters in this font are WAY too close to each other!!!
Hi thanks for inspiring article , certainly gives another perspective, I not a doom sayer, but I have heard that this will be another difficult year, as there will be a volatile and fiery energy that causes tempers to flare, riots , armed robberies and violence will be on the up , even natural disasters like fires and volcanic eruptions will abound? Any truth in this?
Interesting point, Terry. Each year’s energies hold both positive and negative potentials. In past traditions, motivation to consult the astrologers came from hoping to avoid the negatives, and thus an over-emphasis on pointing out the dangers and pitfalls grew into the art and lore. Taking a more enlightened perspective, we can now focus on the positively advantageous and forward moving energies of the year, which tended to get overlooked in the past. While the ego-centric plays of drama and violence may still be in evidence, this year’s swift currents provide us with a stronger support than ever to manifest compassion, cooperation, healthy innovation and joy in a world that is emerging into a brand new level of loving unity. Picture a seed, sprouting out of its casing, sending a taproot down into firm soil, and shooting new stem and leaf up into the light. That is us, and though we may still be up to our shoulders in compost, we are compelled by Nature to reach up, out and away from the darkness this year. Look to the LIGHT! We can TRUST our intuitive truth-seeking hearts and the invisible realms to guide us.
Great article! I noticed there was no mention of air =??
I normally don’t comment online like this…but this is amazing, wish I would have read last years at the beginning of the year, the past three years were slowly and progressively interiorly crazy and chaos and dark and depth sof mortality and why etc…then literally 2 weeks ago things have changed, I can’t explain it, but projects and someday/maybes that have been on my list for those past years have all started or even completed in two weeks, some in the process of finishing. I have felt so creative and energy and intuition and desire to live the life I want and feel, vs for others and then I read this 🙂 Wow. I would love other resources, but will look farther through this site. I just came here to look at the buoga as I am biolding a house and it is almost finished before we bought it and it strangely fits perfectly into it where the bedroom, childs room, creative studio etc… Anyway Thank you!
How exciting. I am a Yang Wood Horse year and I turn 60. Thank you for posting. Ready to bust a move!
Superb article, I am a witness of these powerful energy shifts, myself… It feels like when sailing under heavy winds where your will to steer is sometimes overpowered by the mighty forces on the rudder!!
What a fabulous article describing the energetic cycle we are in right now and will be this year!! Thank you!! I am launching a new, rebranded website on Feb 3rd and can feel the rush of this strong flow. I am thrilled since I definitely have experienced The Slowdown of the past 2+ years. Exciting times for us and for our clients….change is ALREADY in place, and we are aligning with it. Thanks again for illuminating this time period and process. ~Jan
This totally resonates with me. I am glad that you have put this into tangible words!
I agree, Olivia. It RESONATED deeply for me as well!
Very well written!
Can I use this as a guest blog on my blogsite?

This is so very clear and helpful. Thank you for sharing this information.
Thank you, this is a wonderfully insightful & easy to digest explanation of the coming energies…bring it on!
Karen would like permission to use it in my newsletter Energy Transformations.
Yes, please do! Be sure to include our links and author credit! Thank you!
I’m a 1966 Fire Horse. Any others here? If so, join our herd at: https://www.facebook.com/FireHorse.Hinoeuma
I am definitely ready for a year of growth! It feels like the past few years, I have been “setting up” for a big year… and finally it feels like it is arriving! I’m looking forward to a positive, prosperous 2014.
WOW…how amazing, I have just gone through two years of deep soul searching and letting go of old toxic patterns. Just a couple of days ago I had a vision of a beautiful gold palomino. As normally happens with spiritual insight the meaning does become clear. I can feel the horse energy.
Wonderful article. I was wondering what the year of the horse would be like. I love the dates of Jan 31- Feb 4th because I am scheduled to do something big and life changing then! My sister sent me your link. I am most grateful that she did.
Thank you for this very inspiring information. Since I turn 60 this year, it helps me to see the power in the “undoing” of the last few years and brings me back full circle to the now purified, expanded and evolved power within me. reading your article has put clarity to all that I have been feeling. The blinders are coming off and the horse within me is about ready to break out of the stable and run free!
Thank you for this inspirational boost – I SSSOOOO needed it! I surely can wait one more day to break out and run free. For today, I think I will just fuel up and eat to my heart’s delight!
I am so excited for the year of the horse!! Yeeehaaaw! Going to China town with a friend to Celebrate.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You are putting into words what I feel and could not express.
I too have been feeling a huge shift in energies and things that have been on my list to accomplish or happen, are happening already. My power animal is the horse and horses have played a huge part in my life and still do. I ‘m very connected to my mare that I have had for a couple years and we’ve done great things together already. I feel this is going to be a break through year for me on many levels.
Thanks for the great article! That is how it feels to be connected with horse energy!
Thanks for the article! My power animal is the horse and horses have been a huge part of my life as a child and now later as an adult. I’ve been feeling some incredible energy shifts with lots of positive things happening already this year.
Great article! Im wondering what the difference between the yin and yang in front of the element indicates. Years of cause and effect? The last two years were yin….why is this one yang?
Shanon, the years cycle through the 5 elements in both their yin and yang forms. So, this year is Yang Wood, and next year will be yin Wood energy. In 2016 we will move around the elemental wheel from Wood into Fire, and will have first a Yang Fire year, then a yin Fire year. The animal signs continue to rotate through their 12 forms, experiencing each of the elements in their turn. So, this year of the Horse falls in Wood, the next year of the Horse, 12 years from now, will be the Fire Horse. Look out for that one, whoowee, double Fire signs!
Wow! so eloquent and potent. Thank you!
I had a deer hit my van last evening/early AM….it hit me full speed from my right blind side sliding door, then up to my passenger door and right fender…it’s head broke the cover on my headlight….sent me into a swirl, I fishtailed 4 times turning into each one, then did a complete 360 degree and found I was backing up into a 3 foot ditch. Don’t know how but I managed to pull up and out of the ditch thank goodness….perhaps the HORSE YEAR has started on the 30 just after Midnight, and I’M TOTALLY CONVINCED the Deer and MOOSE are feeling the Shift too ;0 As I was trying to get out of the ditch, a lady stopped and asked if she could help….she called me sister on her cell phone, while I was waiting I noticed her right side of the front of the car was heavily damaged …she ended the call and told me that she had just been hit by a MOOSE and was trying back home with the damaged vehicle, she said my sister was coming and she to stay close to the van. I got back in…prayed to the UNIVERSE for Help….then suddenly my front tires grabbed on to the pavement and up the van came onto the road, To me, and thanks to this article above…I understand why the 4 legged creatures are running so fast ! I thank the UNIVERSE for keeping me safe, and I pray the Deer and the Moose are okay ?
Very inspiring. I too feel the energies shifting and I am so looking forward to the power and heart of the horse carrying us all forward.
I am new to this science. I wasborn in July (37) 1936. Am I a horse, a pig or a snake ?
Rene, you were born in a Yang Fire Rat year. The Rat is the first sign of the Chinese Lunar cycle of astrology, placed there for its cleverness, and is considered a very astute, acquisitive, and family-oriented sign. The Rat labors tirelessly for its family, and is the most clever survivor, and the Fire Rat is the most generous of them all!
This is such a wonderful and timely post!!! Horse energy is so pure and positive. I wanted to be a horse more than a human as a child and after corporate careers and complete burnout the horses called to me to return to wholeness and health through my art and their wisdom. For the last few years I feel as though I have been spinning my wheels as I travel the country selling my horse art and speaking of the wisdom and healing powers of these magnificent animals. My horses are my muses and my windhorses and my studio is windhorseOne, dedicated to the Horse. My life is dedicated to creating art to help humanity return to wholeness through the Beauty way and horses as well as help end suffering for them. The last few years have been extremely challenging with many unforeseen and unwelcome large bills that have nearly wiped us out. I started the year with such optimism and hope and reading this article is so inspirational and uplifting. Thank you very much and enjoy your ride! ~ Susan
I was born in a Wood Horse year (1954), so I am also hopeful this year will be a turn around/ rebirth experience. But a little confused about your comment that the yang horse’s native element is fire- what does that mean for me, what are the implications since I was born in a Wood year- is that an inherent conflict?
Love your writing!
Thank-you for this lucid summation of the year to come! 2013 was a personally challenging one, this frames it as the darkness before the light.
In my past horses have always uplifted me and now 45 years I hope they do again. Why I waited so long…………….January 10th, I decided I had to change most of my life around, come of medication that was making me feel worse and start losing weight, my dream is to ride western and I have to be 2 stone and less to do this. I decided I had to take control of my own life. Reading your article tonight has given me more inspiration> Thank you. Karen
I’ve been watching the unfolding of energy as the Year of the Horse approaches and now am embracing it with in full stride. I too will hold on and willing accept this full gallop entry ride from attention robbing distractions into the fullness of the green horse vision supporting and nurturing shoots of promise, acceptance, awareness and exciting realities. I would love to link your wonderful article so readers of my website can read it, but only with your permission of course. Barbara

I am a wood horse (born 60 years ago). What you have written reflects perfectly what has happened and is happening in my life right now. Great article!

So inspiring & positive.
A friend emailed me the link to this post earlier today. I have just gone through the most intense four days I have had in quite some time. I was grieving, I was crying, I was angry, and this morning I felt a shift, a clearing…and now after reading this post, I see why! I am ready for the Adventure of the Yang Wood Horse! With gratitude!
Bacaníssimo, adorei! Grato pela dica. L.
My good friend posted your article on her facebook page, and I am so glad I continued to read all of it. In 2012 my husband lost his job of 17 years, with our health insurance and then the inability to pay our mortgage. What followed was worse, after trying to get help for my only child which we did not receive, a terrible thing happened which left him in a coma. I pray that this year improves our lives with the grace of God and the positive year of the horse. Th
What a interesting and wow article…have tp cöean up some more stuff and reach to the starts
Just found out I am a Wooden Horse 2 weeks ago. Nice to get some clarity o it. Last 2 years have been very challenging. Moved out of my dream property after becoming a widow 2 years earlier. Gave up many belongings to start somewhat fresh, but kick myself for letting so much go. People renting in the process of buying it just had to move out due to disasters on their end so now I am paying both mortgage and rent while now trying to sell it. I love the property so much but cannot keep it up. SO, I look very forward to positive forces blessing me and my path and enabling me to move forward in my life and get into a happier more fluent place. Thanks for the info and letting me share a bit.
