Q & A: Bagua by the Compass vs. Essential Feng Shui
Q: Hi Terah,
I just wondered if you would mind saying something about a Feng Shui dilemma I have. I have been mapping my house based on a compass and directions. When I map my house this way Fire is in the south and that is the front of my house. Then when I look at your Bagua, not based on compass direction but by putting the front of the house at the bottom of the map this flips the guas.
Could you just speak to this as I am totally confused about what to do next. I very much appreciate any feed back you could provide me on this question. thanks very much.

Thanks for your inquiry. Clearly, you’ve discovered that directional and nondirectional Feng Shui will give you 2 different approaches to working with your environment. One of the primary values of the Bagua Map is to invite us to see that every inch of our environment counts and there’s no place that is more or less important than another. Whether you approach your space directionally or nondirectionally, you can see that all areas are equal, each playing their unique role in the environmental body that is your home.
Here’s an experiment you can try. Map your home both ways and compare each Map with your current life’s circumstances. Which one speaks to you as more accurate? How does the quality of your life match up with any missing or compromised Bagua areas? Usually, one Map will line up more completely with your experience of life.
