Q&A: Which Bedroom Color is Best?

Q: Good morning, I’ve been reading The Western Guide to Feng Shui Room by Room. Wonderful and very interesting.  I’ve actually recommended it to about 10 friends.

The challenge I am having, choosing a paint color for my bedroom. I’m a single woman looking to attract a man and bring romance into the bedroom. I want to find a color that balances both masculine and feminine energy.   I’ve read through the list of paint colors on p.181 of the book dozens of times and brought the list to the paint store.  So far I’ve tried 30 samples and yet not have resonated.

I’m writing to you with paint desperation. 🙂  Do you have any specific colors from any specific brands that you would recommend? Behr, Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore. Any brand. I’ve always had a difficult time choosing paint colors and this is proving to be very challenging and unfortunately not fun. And I certainly want to bring joy not anxiety into the bedroom!

I’d be grateful for any thoughts that you would have. Thank you so very very much.

Sincerely,
Christine

A: Hi Christine,

Thanks for your inquiry, and I get it!

Here’s an idea. Find the most resonant color with YOUR skin tone – the color that makes YOU look the most beautiful, sensual, glowing etc. and consider that for your walls. How to do that?

Option 1 – Go to a large linens store and look through their sheet and comforter colors. Choose the ones you resonate with and either go to the mirror department in the store and hold the sheets up to your face to see what ‘clicks’ – or take them home knowing you can return them so you can look at them in the light of your bedroom.

Option 2 – Buy pints of paint that you think could be the winner, paint sections on your bedroom walls in those shades and live with them for a week or so to see how the light interacts with them. Paint more than a little spot – do a 3×3 foot section, and sometimes, it’s great to paint the section of wall behind your bedroom art and rehang the art so you can see the relationship between the art and the color.

Keep me posted on how this unfolds for you!

With Every Blessing,
Terah

Hello Terah!!!

Thank you so very much for getting back with me.  I’ll sound a bit star-struck, but it’s pretty cool to hear back from the AUTHOR of the book.  Thank you for taking the time.

The journey continues, but I’m going to keep flowing ahead.  I’m suck a literal person that wants to “get it right” – so surrendering to the process is interesting.  And the fact that I’m changing from a light blue/black bedroom is a huge shift.  That was a pretty big surprise that those colors weren’t so good for the bedroom!  🙂

Again, thank you and I’ll absolutely keep you posted.

Sincerely,
Christine

  1. Hi, Christine, I, too, get very particular about wall color, and tend to choose colors that are soft and skin-toned throughout my house, to give me a warm cuddly feeling. some colors that have worked for me in all the various lights of both summer and winter, day and night, south and north exposures are: Sandy Brown (Ben.Moore) in living room, Mohair (Ben.Moore) in my bedroom (love it!), Filtered Sunlight (B.M.)in hallways, which brings a lovely soft light to darker spaces. These ideas may give you a jumping off point?

  2. Just bought a new home and am stressing over conflicting info on best colors for different rooms. Do I try to match colors to western bagua map sections–meaning our bedroom is mostly in the Fame/Reputation quadrant, so colors of red? The headboard region however is in the Wealth and Prosperity…I so badly want to get it right now before I paint and buy stuff. And my 3 stall garage takes up a whole third of my house plan (all 3 quadrants–self-cult., health/fam, wealth/pros) and I mistakenly just got done painting it an earthy buff color. Help me please before I completely screw this house up!!!!
