Feng Shui Definitions: Bedrooms

Because our Western culture puts little importance on rest, our bedrooms are frequently not conducive to a good night’s sleep. Ideally, our bedrooms are a perfect combination of cozy nest, rejuvenating oasis, and romantic hideaway. They are a sensual embrace where we go to completely recharge our batteries.

  • Locate bedrooms toward the back of the house, where the Chi is naturally more serene.
  • Dedicate your bedroom to its original role – the room for the BED. Locate possessions that require active Ch’i, such as exercise equipment and desks, in other rooms. Or, place active furniture and equipment as far from the bed as possible, screened or covered when not in use.
  • Choose your colors carefully. The best bedroom colors are skin colors found in all the races, including creamy beiges, browns, pinks, yellows, reds, and lavenders; as well as chocolate, coral, raspberry, butter cream, burgundy, and aubergine. Pure white, black, gray, blue, and cool greens can be included but will make the bedroom chilly and less inviting if they dominate.
  • Choose your art carefully. Serene, romantic, and sensual art belongs in the bedroom. Three-ring circuses, busy cityscapes, and art depicting violence do not.
  • Choose your furniture carefully. Does it carry any “downer” memories, such as a death or divorce? Are there sharp corners or edges that could be dangerous to sleepy – or amorous – body parts? Ideally, all your bedroom furniture is extraordinarily comfortable and safe.
  • The view from your bed influences your view of the world. It’s what you see the first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Make it a good one! Shut, curtain, or screen bathroom or closet doors, and create a view that’s especially pleasing.
  • Many people see a television from their bed. Be sure it’s housed in a cabinet with doors so that it can disappear between uses. TVS are watched more often when they are in plain view and perpetually “staring” at their owners. Consider relocating the TV to another room.
  • One mirror or less in the bedroom. Mirrors activate Ch’i, and can keep a bedroom “awake” all night long. The bigger the mirror is and the closer it is to the bed, the more likely it will disturb the peace. Treat large mirrored closet doors like windows. Curtain them so that you can open and close them as needed. Drape or screen other mirrors before retiring at night. Insomnia has been cured by this simple act.
  • Check under the bed to be sure it is free of clutter. The Ch’i of anything under the bed is affecting you every night!
